About Earth Celebration 2021 (Updated July 5)

Earth Celebration will hold hybrid concerts this year, with a reduced-capacity audience in attendance and a livestream for people to enjoy from their corner of the globe.

We want to make sure that people who attend EC 2021, the locals here on Sado Island, and everyone involved in the festival, are safe and feel at ease at this year’s event. So EC Committee has created and will adhere to strict COVID-19 guidelines (available here in Japanese, and coming soon in English).

We also want to bring people together at EC from throughout Japan and around the world, so we will livestream the main concert events.

Please note that the only events that will take place onsite are the outdoor Harbour Concerts. We will not hold Harbour Market, EC Fringe Stage, or workshops on Sado Island this year. There will be online events on offer instead.

Message from the Executive Producer

In 2021, we will hold Earth Celebration for the 34th consecutive year. Last year, we took the entire festival online for the first time in its long history. This year, after many discussions with Sado City, we have made the decision to welcome an in-person audience back to the festival. Instead of returning to our usual format, we decided to make EC 2021 a hybrid event, keeping the livestream option we introduced last year that allowed people from throughout Japan and around the world to join us virtually for EC.

For the onsite events, our top priority is making sure we have COVID-19 prevention measures in place. To minimize risk, we have adopted a shorter two-day format this year with one outdoor Harbour Concert each day. Audience numbers this year will be reduced to 50% of the usual capacity. Also, we decided not to hold the usual Harbour Market, Fringe performances, onsite workshops, and Sado Experience Programs at EC 2021.

EC will strictly follow guidelines created by the Sado City COVID-19 Countermeasure Task Force to ensure the safety of everyone involved with and surrounding the festival. If you attend in person, there will be a lot of new rules to follow, and we know it will feel restrictive. We really appreciate your understanding during these challenging times and thank you in advance for helping us make EC safe and comfortable for everyone.

Organizers around the world are constantly being forced to cancel events, but we haven’t considered that an option for EC. We feel all the more need right now to bring people together for good times, connected by the resounding sound of taiko. I hope you’ll help us make this year’s festival with Kodo on Sado Island a great celebration, whether you’re here in person or online.
